Barrel Burning |
| |
The Ottery St Mary barrel burning takes place annually on the 5th of November. The town’s folk take part in running through the streets of Ottery with lit tar barrels on their shoulders and is a tradition that attracts many people to the town to watch.
There are many tales to tell about how and why this local tradition began hundreds of years ago. One of which, is that it came from old pagan rituals and that the flames would cleanse the streets of evil spirits.
The people of Ottery work together in producing an event that is fun and safe for everyone and would advise that visitors attend with precaution and respect to help keep this tradition alive.
